Get to Know the All-New Toyota Hilux Hybrid!
We recently sat down with our in-house commercial guru and all-round Hilux fan Jackson Free to chat about the all-new Hilux Hybrid, debunk some misconceptions and his dream Hilux build. Read on to find out more.
Debunking Misconceptions
Q: Let's start with the big question, we know that for some people Hilux and Hybrid aren't something they would consider in the same sentence, but can you debunk some misconceptions about that regarding performance and capability?
J: As soon as people hear the word ‘Hybrid’, they think of electric drive like our RAV4 or Corolla. Rest assured this is the same trusty 2.8D 150kW 500Nm which is always the main drive, therefore retaining a 3500kg tow rating and 700mm wading depth. Driveability is improved with the 48V Li-ion battery providing an extra 65Nm of torque during acceleration, as well as saving approximately 7% fuel compared to the old model. As this is not a plug-in hybrid, it does not incur any additional road user charge fees, other than standard diesel RUCs. Essentially all the performance you're used to with added fuel economy and savings - a win win!
Favorite Feature of the Hilux Hybrid
Q: Tell us about your favourite feature of the new Hilux Hybrid and why it’s a standout for you.
J: The standout for me has to be the new Multi Terrain Select. With 6 different drive modes for whatever substrate you are on, the vehicle will adjust engine output and brakes to provide maximum traction, meaning you can tackle off-road scenarios with confidence.
Ultimate Places to Explore
Q: You’ve put plenty of Hilux through their paces and so have your customers, so where do you think the ultimate place to take a Hilux Hybrid around the region?
J: They really do well anywhere. On-road comfort is absolutely superb. Handling anything off-road with ease, assisted by MTS (Multi Terrain Select) and a rear differential lock to get you out of the stickiest situations. It allows you to explore the huge amount of hidden gems we have here in Otago and the surrounding regions.
Advice on Selecting the Right Hilux
Q: If you could give readers one piece of advice when it comes to selecting the right Hilux for their needs, what would it be, and why?
J: I think the first thing I would suggest is to know what the main purpose of the vehicle is and what features are important to you. This will help narrow down which model may be best suited to you and the job you need it to do. There's a difference, for example, in the right vehicle for tackling the job site and a vehicle that needs to tackle the back blocks of a high country station.
Dream Hilux Hybrid Model and Build
Q: Finally, let's talk the dream Hilux. What's your ultimate Hilux Hybrid model and accessory build?
J: It has to be the SR5 Cruiser with its wide stance and improved ride quality. I would have my SR5 Cruiser set up with the following accessories: tow bar, canopy with sliding windows, and a BedRug Liner for the dogs. I would also add a bonnet protector and slimline weather shields. A black nudge bar on the front finishes off the truck nicely.
